Jewellery Care Guide

Wondering how to take care of your diamond jewellery? Here are some actions you can take.

Four steps that you can take to take good care of your diamond jewellery are to:

  1. Insure it
  2. Clean it
  3. Take it off when necessary
  4. Consult with a jeweller

1. INSURING YOUR JEWELLERY

It is worthwhile insuring your jewellery under your household contents policy to make sure you can replace, it or have it repaired if you need to.

Since diamonds and precious metals change in value, revisit that insurance policy every five years for an appraisal — you may not be able to have it replaced with a comparable piece of jewellery years down the track if you haven’t adjusted your insurance policy to suit its current value.

2. CLEANING YOUR JEWELLERY

Warm water and a soft-bristled toothbrush with dishwashing liquid is an easy and effective way for cleaning your ring on a weekly basis.

Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean jewellery, since bleach and general cleaning agents can harm gemstones and dull the finish of a ring.

3. TAKE OFF YOUR JEWELLERY WHEN NECESSARY

If you’re cleaning the house, turning over the garden, or doing a particularly “hands-on” task, it’s a good idea to remove your ring.

This lowers the risk of damage through undue wear and tear.

4. CONSULT WITH A JEWELLER

Consult a local jeweller for the maintenance of your ring to make sure it’s in good condition.

They will look out for any loose stones, cracks, and ill-fitting prongs, and this can reduce the risk of your jewellery requiring more serious repairs in the future, and can also advise you on how to properly clean your jewellery.
